Sciatica
Overview
Sciatica is a nerve-related pain condition caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower spine through the buttocks and down the leg.
It typically causes sharp, shooting pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness along the affected side, often worsening with prolonged sitting, bending, or sudden movements.
In many cases, it is linked to underlying spinal or postural issues that place pressure on the nerve.
- Sharp or shooting pain starting in the lower back and radiating to the leg
- Tingling or “pins and needles” sensation down one leg
- Numbness in the buttock, thigh, or calf area
- Pain that worsens while sitting for long periods
- Discomfort when bending, lifting, or twisting
- Weakness in one leg during movement or walking
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed, often due to structural changes in the lower spine.
Common causes include a slipped or herniated disc, spinal degeneration, or muscle tightness that places pressure on the nerve pathway.
This compression disrupts normal nerve signaling, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates down the leg.
- Herniated or slipped spinal disc
- Age-related spinal degeneration
- Poor posture and prolonged sitting
- Muscle tightness in lower back and hips
- Obesity increasing spinal load
- Previous spinal injury or strain
- Sedentary lifestyle and weak core support
If nerve compression persists, sciatica can lead to ongoing functional issues, including:
- Chronic radiating pain from lower back to leg
- Persistent tingling, numbness, or burning sensation
- Difficulty in walking, sitting, or bending for long periods
- Muscle weakness in the affected leg
- Reduced mobility and activity tolerance
- Sleep disturbance due to pain flare-ups
- People with long sitting hours or desk jobs
- Those with lower back pain radiating to the leg
- Individuals with poor posture or weak core
- People with past disc issues or spinal strain
- Those with tingling or numbness in one leg
Sciatic pain may come and go, but the underlying issue often persists over time.
