Overview

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissues, causing persistent inflammation.

Unlike age-related wear and tear, RA often affects multiple joints simultaneously and commonly appears symmetrically β€” affecting both hands, wrists, knees or feet together.

Over time, inflammation can damage joints, reduce flexibility and affect energy levels, making early recognition and ongoing management important.

Early signs to notice

- Morning stiffness lasting over 30 minutes
- Joint swelling or warmth
- Pain in hands and feet
- Reduced grip strength
- Persistent fatigue
- Persistent low-grade fever
- Difficulty performing everyday tasks
- General body aches without exerting excessive strain

Why it happens

In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints (synovium), leading to chronic inflammation. This causes swelling, pain, stiffness, and progressive joint damage over time.

Over time, persistent inflammation can erode cartilage and bone, leading to deformity and reduced joint function. In some cases, inflammation can also affect other organs like the lungs and blood vessels.

It develops due to a combination of genetic susceptibility and immune dysregulation, often triggered by environmental factors such as smoking, infections, and hormonal influences.

Common contributing factors

- Autoimmune dysfunction
- Family history
- Smoking
- Hormonal influences
- Environmental triggers
- Obesity
- Chronic inflammation

If not managed well

Poorly managed RA can cause physical difficulties like:
‍

- Joint deformities
- Reduced mobility and flexibility
- Chronic body and joint pain
- Gradual muscle weakness
- Cardiovascular complications
- Reduced overall quality of life

Who should pay closer attention

- Women are more prone
- Adults aged 30-60
- Individuals with existing autoimmune conditions
- People with family history of arthritis or autoimmunice conditions

‍

Inflammation affects far more than just your joints. It leads to lifestyle-restricting complications.
